1984 Canada Cup Story
Just like its predecessors, the 1984 Canada Cup showcased the six most prolific hockey nations. However, this time West Germany would participate instead of Team Finland. There were also some other changes most notably the Soviet Union team. Missing was long-time goaltender stalwart, Vladislav Tretiak, who had become a symbol of Soviet hockey greatness. Despite winning the Canada Cup in 1981, Russian coach Viktor Tikhonov added eleven fresh faces to the present team. Returning youngster like Kasatonov and Makarov had established themselves as the mature team leaders of the Soviet Union at the tender ages of 24 and 26 respectively.
Meanwhile, Team Canada also barely resembled its 1981 Cup squad as merely five of their twenty-three players returned for the present series.
